Vlychada Marina: Santorini's South Coast Port and Beach
Vlychada Marina is the small harbor on Santorini's low southern shore, and it is the departure point for many of the catamaran cruises compared on this site. The port sits about 10 km from Fira, next to a long black-sand beach under tall pumice cliffs. This guide covers where Vlychada is, which cruises leave from here and their card prices, how the meeting points work, the beach and the Tomato Industrial Museum, and the ways to reach the marina by bus, car or transfer. For the other departure port below Oia, see Ammoudi Bay. The bookable tours are compared on catamaran cruises in Santorini.

The Beach and the Cliffs
The beach beside the marina is one of the strangest landscapes on the island, carved out of volcanic ash.
The Pumice Cliffs
The pale cliffs behind Vlychada beach are pumice and tuff from the Minoan eruption of about 1600 BC, with a tephra blanket up to 60 meters thick. Wind and water have carved them into shapes that one snorkeling guide compares to a lunar landscape. The rock is weakly cemented, and similar cliffs elsewhere on the south coast shed rock, especially after rain or in strong wind.
Do not climb on the pumice cliffs, because material can come loose without warning.
- Cliff material: pumice and tuff from the Minoan eruption
- Tephra blanket up to 60 meters thick
Vlychada Beach
Vlychada Beach has dark volcanic sand and is a long beach, though the sources disagree on its length. The dark sand holds heat, so footwear is worth carrying. Water safety is rated moderate because of rocky patches, and water shoes are advised.
A free informal parking lot sits at the beach. Wikivoyage describes the southern end as a nudist beach. Divers list it as a 10 to 15 meter dive with underwater statues and amphoras.
| Beach fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Sand | Black volcanic sand that holds heat |
| Length | Long beach, sources differ on the length |
| Parking | Free informal lot at the beach |
| Water safety | Moderate, rocky patches, water shoes advised |
| Diving | 10 to 15 m depth with underwater statues and amphoras |
Tomato Industrial Museum D. Nomikos
The Tomato Industrial Museum D. Nomikos occupies the old tomato factory at Vlychada, which was founded in 1945 by Dimitris Nomikos, closed in 1981 and opened as a museum in 2014. It was the first factory to produce canned tomato products in the Balkans. The museum sits in the Santorini Arts Factory complex and offers guided tours in five languages, plus activities such as tomato cooking, paste-making and can-sealing.
On the museum's own site, admission is EUR 12 general and EUR 10 reduced for ages 8 to 18, students, unemployed visitors and people over 65, with free entry for ages 0 to 7 and for people with disabilities with an attendant. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 between April and November and closes on Mondays. One older guide lists EUR 10 and shorter shoulder-season hours of 10:00 to 16:00, so check the museum's own site. There is a cafe, online ticket booking and wheelchair and stroller access.
| Museum detail | Value |
|---|---|
| General admission | EUR 12 |
| Reduced admission | EUR 10 |
| Free entry | Ages 0 to 7 and disabilities with attendant |

Getting to Vlychada
Vlychada has no ferry terminal traffic, so reaching it means a bus, a car or a cruise transfer.
Bus From Fira
A KTEL bus runs from Fira to Vlychada, one bus guide lists the fare at EUR 2.70 one way, and one beach guide lists three departures a day taking about 20 minutes. Three a day is not a turn-up-and-go service, so check the timetable at Fira bus station before you set out, especially for a late return after a sunset cruise. By comparison, buses from Athinios, the main ferry port, to Fira cost about 2 to 3 euros.
- KTEL bus Fira to Vlychada: EUR 2.70 one way
- About 20 minutes, roughly three departures a day
- Free informal parking at the beach if you drive
Transfers and Pickup
Most Vlychada cruises on this site list hotel pickup, though it depends on the option you pick. On the Spiridakos Sailing Catamaran the Joy option has no transfers. Pickup begins about 20 minutes to 1.5 hours before departure.
That makes the transfer the simplest option if you are not staying in walking distance. From the airport, the port is 6 to 7 km away, though no fixed airport transfer fare is stated in the sources. Cruise-ship guests should note that tendering at the Old Port plus transport can cost 2 or more hours, so a 5-hour cruise from Vlychada fills nearly a whole port call, and the cruise-port page explains the options.

Tips for Vlychada
Practical points drawn only from the sources in this guide.
Do
- Do bring water shoes, because the seabed has rocky patches and the beach's water safety is rated moderate.
- Do carry footwear for the sand, because the dark volcanic sand holds heat and can burn bare feet.
- Do check your voucher for the exact meeting point, because one operator meets guests at the ATM behind the mini market 30 minutes before departure.
- Do book as soon as you decide, because operators say demand peaks from June to September.
- Do visit the Tomato Industrial Museum on a weekday other than Monday, because it opens Tuesday to Sunday and closes Mondays.
Don't
- Don't climb on the pumice cliffs, because the weakly cemented rock sheds material, especially after rain or in strong wind.
- Don't rely on the bus for a late return, because only about three departures a day are listed.
- Don't plan a beach day in the peak meltemi season, because one beach guide advises June, early July and September and says to avoid the July and August winds.
- Don't assume the museum is open outside April to November, because its own site lists that season only.

How far is Vlychada Marina from Fira?
The marina lies about 10 km from Fira, and the beach about 13 km by one measure. A KTEL bus covers the run at EUR 2.70 one way in about 20 minutes, or you can take a cruise with hotel pickup as described on the Santorini Star Catamaran page.
How do I get to Vlychada Beach from Fira?
Take the KTEL bus, which runs the route for EUR 2.70 one way in about 20 minutes, though only about three departures a day are listed. Driving is easier, with a free informal parking lot at the beach. The routes page on Santorini catamaran cruises covers how the stops connect by boat.
Which catamaran cruises leave from Vlychada Marina?
Nine of the cruises compared here name Vlychada as their departure harbor, from the $85 Spiridakos Sailing Catamaran to the $944 private Sail Away Catamaran for up to 4 guests. Standard cruises last 5 hours and morning cruises 4 hours.
Where is the meeting point at Vlychada Port?
It depends on the operator. One listing meets guests next to the ATM behind the mini market building 30 minutes before departure, and the Santorini Star uses the old marina. Most guests skip the problem by taking hotel pickup where the listing includes it, which starts about 20 minutes to 1.5 hours before departure.
Is Vlychada good for swimming?
Yes, with footwear. The water is clear and relatively deep, but water safety is rated moderate because of rocky patches, so water shoes are advised. Catamarans cannot moor directly on the beaches, so swim stops happen a short distance offshore, as the Renieris Classic Catamaran route with three stops shows.
What is at Vlychada besides the marina?
The long black-sand beach under pale pumice cliffs, waterfront tavernas in the harbor, and the Tomato Industrial Museum, open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 between April and November. If you would rather see the island's south coast from the water, the Yachting Cruises Sunset Dinner sails daily from Vlychada at 3:00 PM.
