Santorini Catamaran Cruise

The Santorini caldera measures about 12 by 7 km with cliffs over 300 m, and the Red Beach, the White Beach and the hot springs are seen best or only from the water. What separates one Santorini catamaran cruise from another is how many people share the boat, which port it leaves from and whether you sail in the morning or at sunset.

Quick answer The pick, the lowest price and which port

A Santorini catamaran cruise is a 5-hour shared, small-group or private sailing in the caldera, leaving from Ammoudi Bay below Oia or from Vlychada Marina, from $67 per person. Every boat here follows much the same route: Red Beach and White Beach from the water, a swim at the Palea Kameni hot springs, past Nea Kameni without landing, then a BBQ stop. The differences are group size, port, departure time and what the price covers.

Shared Catamarans: The Lowest Prices

The big shared catamarans carry the lowest prices in Santorini, from $67 for a 5-hour cruise with a meal and drinks. This is where a Santorini catamaran cruise costs least per head.

A Shared Day on the Water

The day starts with hotel pickup, which can begin almost 1.5 hours before departure depending on where you stay. On board there is a safety briefing of about 15 minutes, then the crew works through the stops: Red Beach seen from the water, a swim of about 30 minutes, the same at the hot springs or a bay, and a BBQ stop where the meal is served at anchor. Catamarans cannot moor on the beaches, so swimming happens as close as the skipper can get. All catamaran vessels have toilets on board. The biggest boat in this group takes 50 to 55 guests, which is the trade-off for the $67 price.

Itineraries and stops can change without notice in bad weather, so read the route on the card as the plan, not a promise.

  • Pickup from about 20 minutes to almost 1.5 hours before departure, depending on the listing and your hotel
  • About a 15-minute briefing before boarding
  • Swim and snorkel stops of about 30 minutes
  • A BBQ meal with salads, grilled meat and vegetarian options on most boats

What the Low Price Leaves Out

The drinks line is where shared cruises differ most. On Spiridakos the base fare covers white wine and soft drinks only, and beer, shrimp and beef sausage arrive only on the Premium and Luxury options, with cocktails on Luxury alone. Beers and cocktails are sold on board on some other boats.

So a $67 fare can end up costing more if you want the full drinks list. Read the drinks line on each card before you book, and check the what is on board section for the full picture.

Small-Group and Luxury Catamarans

The small-group and luxury boats cut the headcount to 16 to 20 and add to the meal and the bar. They suit travelers who want space and a quieter deck more than the lowest price. The Thirassia stop and the island itself are on Thirasia.

The Small-Group Listings

The small-group and luxury catamarans compared on the price per person, the guest cap, the port and the meal. The figures come from the listings. Every one of them still runs the caldera route, so the extra money buys room on deck and a fuller table.

What 16 to 20 Guests Changes

With 16 to 20 passengers instead of 50 there is room on the trampoline and the decks, and the crew has time to serve the meal properly. The open bar is standard at this level: Santorini Star pours local white wine, beer and a glass of Prosecco, ViSta Platinum covers alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks plus a special sunset wine, and Sunset Oia Luxury adds a cocktail to the bar. Cocktails are part of the fare on Spiridakos Luxury Small Group, two per person, and on Sunset Oia Luxury.

Seafood appears on the menu where the listing says so, as on Santorini Star and Santorini Day Tours. Infants ride on a lap on some boats, and each card gives its own age bands.

The Thirassia Stop and Who Suits

Two boats add a swim at Thirassia, the second-largest island in the group. Caldera Yachting Thirassia makes the island its first stop, and Santorini Star Catamaran swims there too. The stop is at Korfos, a narrow strip of black volcanic stone with fishermen's houses and tavernas, and a 270-step stone path climbs to Manolas village above if you want the walk. The small boats suit couples who came for the sunset, families who want space, and anyone who found the 50-guest boats too busy.

Check the minimum ages on the cards, since they differ from listing to listing.

The Private Catamaran

One listing on this site is a true private charter, priced by the boat rather than the head. It is the most expensive way onto the water and the only one where the deck belongs to you.

The Price and the Day

Sail Away Private Catamaran costs $944 for a group of up to 4, for a 5-hour cruise from Vlychada Marina with a captain and one crew member. For 4 people that is $236 each. The fare covers a meal prepared on board with seafood, Greek butter beans, dolmades and salad, plus wine from local wineries, beer and soft drinks.

The route runs to Red Beach, White Beach and Mesa Pigadia, past the Indian Rock and the Venetian Lighthouse. Fuel, taxes, port fees and insurance are included, towels are not, so bring your own. Departure times shift through the season with the sunset.

Who a Private Boat Suits and What to Confirm

A private catamaran suits a proposal, a small family, or anyone who wants the pace set by the group rather than the schedule. With only your party on board the skipper can linger at a swim stop or move on early. Two things to confirm before you pay.

First, the pickup: the description says hotel pickup carries an extra charge while the inclusions list shared pickup by minivan, so confirm the pickup with the operator. Second, the route: the operator can reschedule the departure and adjust the itinerary with the weather, and the morning or sunset choice changes the departure times through the season.

Ammoudi Bay or Vlychada: Where the Boats Leave

Santorini catamaran cruises leave from two ports. The port decides how long your transfer takes and where the sunset run finishes. Each port has its own page: Ammoudi Bay, Vlychada Marina and the Santorini cruise port for ship passengers.

The Two Ports Compared

Most Santorini catamaran cruises start at one of two harbours. Ammoudi Bay sits below Oia at the northern tip of the caldera, 300 steps down from the town. Vlychada Marina is a working fishing harbour on the low southern shore, about 10 km from Fira and 6 to 7 km from the airport.

It runs 24 hours and takes boats up to 20 metres long. The table shows which cruises use which port. Two listings name no port and pick you up at your hotel.

Which Port Suits Where You Stay

Operators advise guests staying in Oia or Imerovigli to pick a cruise from Ammoudi because the transfer is shorter. Guests in the south of the island are advised to pick Vlychada, the nearest port. Pickup times shift through the season because the sunset moves. One operator lists April pickups at 10:00 and 15:00 and October pickups at 9:00 and 14:00. Hotel pickup can begin from about 20 minutes up to 1.5 hours before departure depending on the cruise and where you stay.

The meeting points are stated on the cards. Santorini Star Catamaran meets guests at the old marina of Vlychada. Renieris Classic Catamaran meets next to the Santa Maria Sailing Yacht and tells you the vessel one day before. Spiridakos Sailing Catamaran meets next to the ATM, about 30 minutes before the cruise starts. ViSta Platinum Catamaran meets right after the beach at the sign for the hotel Notos, where a minibus with the ViSta Yachting logo parks. Yachting Cruises Sunset Dinner asks you to look for its catamaran 30 minutes before departure. Sail Away Private Catamaran leaves Vlychada Marina, and its listing gives two different pickup lines, so confirm the pickup with the operator.

Cruise-Ship Passengers

Cruise ships cannot dock at Santorini. They anchor in the caldera and tender passengers to the Old Port below Fira, which has no road access. From there the climb is nearly 600 steps, or 3 minutes by cable car at €10 one way. Queues for the cable car can exceed an hour on busy days. Tendering plus transport costs you 2 or more hours, so a 5-hour catamaran cruise fills nearly the whole port call.

Some operators cannot pick up at the Old Port. Spiridakos Sailing Catamaran and Spiridakos Luxury Small Group ask cruise guests to take the cable car to the Fira office at least one hour before the cruise. Give the operator your first and last tender times so you get back to the ship on time. Athinios is Santorini's main ferry port and is a separate harbour from both cruise ports.

Morning or Sunset Cruise

Both departures follow a similar 5-hour route. They differ in the light, the swim time and how the wind behaves. Every sunset cruise is set side by side on the Santorini sunset cruise page.

Sunset Times Through the Season

Sunset times compared month by month, from the ranges a Santorini sunset-times guide publishes. Santorini sunset moves from 17:05 in late December to 20:40 at the summer solstice, and operators move their departures to match.

MonthSunset
January17:14 to 17:43
February17:44 to 18:12
May20:05 to 20:30
June solstice20:40
July20:40 to 20:25
September19:50 to 19:05
Late December17:05

What Changes Between the Two

On the sunset cruises the boats usually sit below Oia or opposite Akrotiri village for the light show. Start times move earlier as the days shorten. From mid-September to March one operator moves its sunset start earlier to 14:15 from Vlychada because of the earlier sunset.

Operators advise warm clothes on the sunset run. The morning departure sails before the afternoon, when the meltemi is strongest. Several cruises, such as Sunset Oia Luxury Open Bar and Renieris Classic Catamaran, offer both morning and sunset departures so you can choose. Yachting Cruises Sunset Dinner runs a fixed 3:00 PM sunset departure from Vlychada every day.

The Meltemi Wind

The meltemi is a persistent northern wind that blows periodically from about mid-May to mid-September and is strongest in the afternoon. It can reach force 7 to 8 on the Beaufort scale and often dies down at night, though it sometimes lasts for days. In strong wind the itinerary changes.

Operators say waves are usually small inside the caldera where the boats stop to swim. A cruise cancelled for bad weather is fully refunded or can be moved to another date.

The Stops on a Santorini Catamaran Cruise

The route is close to the same on every boat, and the wind decides the order. These are the stops a Santorini catamaran cruise makes or sails past. Each stop has a page of its own, from Red Beach to the Santorini volcano and the hot springs.

The rust-red cliffs of Red Beach, seen on every Santorini catamaran cruise From the water only

Red Beach

Rust-colored cliffs rise above dark pebbles at this volcanic cove near Akrotiri. Land access is closed because of rockfall danger, so boats see it from the water and guests swim offshore. Catamarans cannot moor on the beaches, so they stop as close as they safely can. Fits best: Santorini Star Catamaran.

Pale pumice cliffs between White Beach and Red Beach, a stop on a Santorini catamaran cruise Snorkeling stop

White Beach

White Beach has no road and no safe footpath, so it is reached only by boat. Tall pale cliffs of pumice and volcanic ash stand above dark sand and pebbles. Boats stop off it to swim and snorkel. Fits best: Sunset Oia Luxury Open Bar.

The chapel on the shore of Palea Kameni, at the hot springs swim of a Santorini catamaran cruise Swim of 30 minutes or so

Palea Kameni Hot Springs

The springs sit in a small cove off Palea Kameni, the older of the two volcanic islets. The water is warmer than the sea and tinted orange by sulfur, iron and manganese, with a peak of 35 degrees C (95 degrees F) by the Greek national tourism site. Some boats keep 50 meters off and you swim across open water to reach them. Fits best: ViSta Platinum Catamaran.

The crater of Nea Kameni, sailed past on a Santorini catamaran cruise Sailed past, no landing

Nea Kameni

Nea Kameni is the young lava dome in the middle of the caldera, born in the 1707 to 1712 eruptions, with the last eruption in 1950. Catamaran cruises sail past it but do not land. The crater walk is a separate volcano tour with a 5 euro cash entrance fee collected at the site. Fits best: Renieris Classic Catamaran.

The black pebble beach of Mesa Pigadia, the BBQ stop of a Santorini catamaran cruise Longest swim and BBQ stop

Mesa Pigadia and Indian Rock

Mesa Pigadia is a beach of black pebbles reached by boat or dirt road, with rocks and urchins on the seabed. Boats pass the Indian Rock on the way. One operator's typical stop here runs about 1.5 hours with the BBQ served at anchor. Fits best: Comfort Max Catamaran.

Akrotiri Lighthouse at the southwest tip, passed on a Santorini catamaran cruise Passed at the southwest tip

Akrotiri Lighthouse

The lighthouse near Akrotiri's western tip was built in 1892 by a French company and recommissioned by the Greek Navy in 1945 after World War II. Operators list it as the Venetian Lighthouse stop, but that is their stop name rather than its history. The boat rounds it between the beaches and the volcano. Fits best: Spiridakos Luxury Small Group.

Food, Drinks and What to Bring

Every cruise includes a meal and drinks. What exactly lands on your plate depends on the boat and the price band. Where to snorkel and what the water is like is on Santorini snorkeling.

What Is Included on Board

Big shared catamarans and small-group boats both feed you, but the small-group boats add seafood, cocktails or Prosecco, and the operators supply gear like towels and snorkel sets on many listings. The table compares the two bands using what the listings state about meals, drinks and equipment.

Diets, Children and Shoes

Operators offer vegetarian or vegan meals if you request them in the booking notes, and some ask for diet details at check-out. State food allergies at booking. Children under 12 must be accompanied on board, and one operator refuses alcohol to anyone under 18.

All passengers attend the safety briefing and take off their shoes before boarding. On one operator the vegetarian plate is Greek salad, pasta, roasted vegetables and dolmadakia, so a meat-free guest still gets a full meal. Dream Catcher Sailing and ViSta Platinum Catamaran list their own age bands on the card, so check them before you book for a child.

What to Bring

Wear a dark or old swimsuit. The sulfur and iron in the Palea Kameni springs permanently stain light fabric and silver jewelry. Bring a light jacket or sweater in spring and autumn and on sunset runs, when the air cools.

Sun protection matters, since the UV index peaks at 10 in June and July. The sea sits at about 16 C from January to April and warms to about 24 C in August and September, and July to September is the comfortable swim window. Add a hat, sunscreen, a towel where the listing does not provide one, and a passport or ID card, which several listings ask you to bring.

Before You Book a Santorini Catamaran Cruise

A few decisions made before you pay decide how good the day is. These come from the operators' own listings and the port and weather facts.

Do

  • Do book early for June to September because operators say demand peaks in those months and advise booking as soon as you decide.
  • Do pick the port near your hotel because operators advise guests in Oia or Imerovigli to sail from Ammoudi Bay and guests in the south to sail from Vlychada, so the transfer is shorter.
  • Do pack a dark or old swimsuit because the sulfur and iron in the Palea Kameni springs can permanently stain light fabric and silver jewelry.
  • Do bring cash if you ever plan a separate Nea Kameni crater walk, because the €5 entrance fee is collected at the trailhead and card readers there are unreliable.
  • Do check your ship's first and last tender times before booking if you arrive by cruise ship, because passengers lose 2 or more hours to tendering and transport and a 5-hour catamaran can fill nearly a whole port call.

Don't

  • Don't expect to land on the volcano or walk to Red Beach, because the catamarans sail past Nea Kameni without stopping and Red Beach is closed to land access, so both are seen from the water.
  • Don't wear white or silver into the hot springs, because sulfur and iron oxides cause permanent staining on swimsuits and jewelry.
  • Don't book a sunset departure on a cruise-ship day without checking the last tender, because tender queues at the Old Port can exceed an hour on busy call days and the boat will not wait.
  • Don't assume the route is fixed in summer, because the meltemi wind blows from about mid-May to mid-September, can reach force 7 to 8, and operators state the itinerary changes in strong wind.

Is a Santorini Catamaran Cruise Worth It

For most visitors the answer is yes, with two conditions. Pick the right boat size and accept that the route is set by the wind, not the brochure.

What we genuinely like

  • You see Red Beach and White Beach from the water, which is the only way to see Red Beach at all now that land access is closed.
  • The hot springs swim at Palea Kameni is included, with water warmer than the sea around it.
  • A meal and drinks are in the price on every listing, from a Greek BBQ with unlimited wine on the Comfort Max Catamaran to cocktails on the Spiridakos Luxury Small Group.
  • Hotel pickup is on every listing, including the Sail Away Private Catamaran, where you confirm the pickup with the operator.
  • Entry prices start at $67 per person for a 5-hour cruise.

The honest downsides

  • The biggest shared boats carry 50 to 55 guests, so a Sunset Oia Ocean Voyager ticket means a full deck.
  • The meltemi wind can change the route, and operators say stops can shift without notice in bad weather.
  • No catamaran lands on Nea Kameni, so the volcano stays a view, not a walk.
  • Sunset runs end in the dark in winter, when the sun sets as early as 17:05 in late December.
  • Cocktails and beer come only on some tiers, and the cheapest fares pour wine and soft drinks.

Who it's NOT for: Travelers who want to hike the volcano crater or set foot on Red Beach need a different tour, because no catamaran on this page stops on either.

Which Santorini Catamaran Cruise Fits You

Six common situations, each matched to a boat or a section of this guide.

If You are a couple chasing the sunset

Then a sunset departure from Ammoudi puts you under Oia as the light goes. The Sunset Oia Ocean Voyager is the cheapest way in, and the sunset timing section explains how the sun moves from 17:05 in late December to 20:40 at the summer solstice.

If You are traveling with children

Then pick a morning run with snorkel gear on board and hotel pickup included. The Spiridakos Sailing Catamaran runs mornings from Ammoudi at $85 for 5 hours, and the route section shows the swim stops.

If You arrive on a cruise ship

Then you tender to the Old Port of Fira, which has no road access, and operators ask cruise guests to allow at least one hour before departure. Read the ports and cruise-ship section and check your last tender, then look at the Santorini Day Tours Small Cruise, which picks up cruise guests in Fira Town.

If You want the lowest price

Then the shared catamarans start at $67 per person for 5 hours. Compare the Sunset Oia Ocean Voyager and the Comfort Max Catamaran in the full catalog.

If You are staying in Oia or Imerovigli

Then sail from Ammoudi Bay below Oia, because operators say the transfer from there is shorter. The Santorini Day Tours Small Cruise leaves Ammoudi for up to 20 guests.

If You want a private group of your own

Then the Sail Away Private Catamaran takes up to 4 per booking from Vlychada Marina for $944 per group, with a captain and one crew member for 5 hours.

Santorini Catamaran Cruise: Your Questions

What is the best catamaran cruise in Santorini?

The pick is the Santorini Star Catamaran: $111 for a 5-hour cruise with a meal and an open bar, a maximum of 18 passengers, and a 4.9 rating from 624 reviews.

How much does a catamaran cruise in Santorini cost?

Shared catamarans start at $67 per person, small-group and luxury boats run from $111 to $229.06, and the private Sail Away Catamaran is $944 per group of up to 4. Free cancellation to 24 hours before applies on every listing.

Is a Santorini catamaran cruise worth it?

Yes if you want the caldera cliffs, a hot springs swim and a meal with drinks in one trip, from $67. The honest drawbacks are set out in the worth-it section: crowds on the big boats, wind changes and no volcano landing.

Morning or sunset catamaran cruise?

Morning sails before the afternoon meltemi, while sunset runs are timed to the sun, which sets between 17:05 in late December and 20:40 at the summer solstice. Details are in the morning or sunset section.

Does the catamaran leave from Oia?

Some do and some do not. Boats such as the Sunset Oia Ocean Voyager leave from Ammoudi Bay below Oia, reached by 300 steps down from the town, while more of them sail from Vlychada Marina on the south coast. See the ports section.

Can cruise-ship passengers do a catamaran cruise?

Yes, with planning. Ships tender to the Old Port of Fira, which has no road access, and passengers lose 2 or more hours to tendering, so check the last tender and allow at least one hour before departure. The Santorini Day Tours Small Cruise picks up cruise guests in Fira Town, and the ports section covers cruise-ship logistics.

For the balance of price, crowd size and on-board food and drink, the Santorini Star Catamaran is the pick at $111 for 5 hours with a maximum of 18 passengers.

Free cancellation to 24 hours before departure on every listing.
